Seven Imo Police Officers Detained Over Checkpoint Extortion, Misconduct

Imo State commissioner of police, Aboki Danjuma, has arrested seven police officers over their alleged involvement in infractions ranging from extortion and misconduct to brutality.

According to a statement by the spokesperson of the command, Henry Okoye, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Danjuma arrested them during his unscheduled statewide inspection of the checkpoints following reports by the public on the unruly and unprofessional conduct of the officers, stating that appropriate disciplinary measures had been initiated against them.

It read: “In a renewed effort to entrench professionalism, discipline, and public confidence in police operations, the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Aboki Danjuma, on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, embarked on an operational tour of police checkpoints across the state — including those along the Owerri–Onitsha, Owerri–Port Harcourt, and Owerri–Umuahia highways.

“Following the inspection, seven (7) personnel were identified and arrested for various infractions. Appropriate disciplinary measures have been initiated in line with established procedures, and further updates will be communicated in due course.

“The inspection followed reports and complaints from members of the public concerning alleged acts of extortion, harassment, and other forms of unprofessional conduct by some police personnel on field duties.”

He disclosed that during the tour, the commissioner addressed the officers on the need to uphold the core values of modern policing, bordering on discipline, integrity, and respect for human rights.

He warned that any officer found engaging in extortion or intimidation of members of the public would face strict disciplinary measures accordingly, including dismissal and possible prosecution.

The statement disclosed that the police boss interacted with commuters, urging them not to surrender their phones for unauthorised searches, maintaining that it was “unlawful, unethical, and intolerable.

The statement said the police commissioner used the occasion to strengthen and promote public accountability and confidence, issuing the emergency contact numbers of the X-Squad and Complaint Response Unit (CRU), urging the public to report any officer who engages in misconduct, promising that it would be treated with confidentiality.

He promised that the command, under Danjuma’s watch, would ensure the restoration of “public trust, building a police force anchored on integrity, justice, and service to the people.”
