Orsu, Imo State – June 25, 2025 — The Imo State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the tragic explosion that occurred on June 24, 2025, at Eke Ubaheze Market Square, Awo-Idemili in Orsu Local Government Area, resulting in one fatality and five injuries.
According to a statement from the Command, the explosion occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. when Ngozi Umeh, a middle-aged woman from Ubaheze village, allegedly stepped on an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), believed to have been planted by suspected IPOB/ESN operatives. Umeh sustained critical injuries and was later confirmed dead at a nearby hospital. Five others were injured in the blast and are currently receiving medical treatment.
In response to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, immediately deployed personnel from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, Tactical Teams, and operatives from Orsu and Orlu Divisions to secure the scene. The affected area was swiftly cordoned off, victims evacuated, and a thorough sweep conducted to detect any additional threats. Authorities have since declared the market square safe, and normal activities have resumed under heightened security.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) has been directed to lead a detailed investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
CP Danjuma extended his condolences to the family of the late Ngozi Umeh and expressed his hope for the quick recovery of the injured. He reaffirmed the Command’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property across Imo State.
“We remain resolute in our efforts to rid the state of criminal elements and ensure the safety of our citizens,” the Commissioner stated.
Residents of Orsu and neighboring communities have been urged to remain calm and continue their lawful activities, as robust security measures are in place to prevent a recurrence.
