Imo Shuts Schools as Diphtheria Outbreak Claims Three Pupils in Orlu

The Imo State government has ordered the immediate closure of all schools in parts of Orlu Local Government Area after a fresh diphtheria outbreak claimed the lives of three pupils—a girl and two boys—over the weekend.

Commissioner for Primary and Secondary Education, Prof. B. T. O. Ikegwuoha, confirmed the outbreak in a statement on Sunday, citing Amihie Ward, Obibi Ochasi, Okwuabala, and Ihiteowere as the most affected communities. He described the measure as a “necessary step to prevent further tragedy,” following confirmation of three deaths and additional suspected cases within families in the area.

“This decision underscores the importance of timely action to contain the disease and ensure the well-being of all citizens,” Ikegwuoha said.

The commissioner also linked the latest outbreak to a previous wave in Aboh Mbaise, which resulted in six fatalities last month. Schools there had only just reopened after a temporary closure. The new shutdown affects institutions in Obibi Ochasi, Ogberuru, Okwuabala, Ihioma Clan, Ihitenansa, Asaa Ubirielem, Umuhu Okabia, and surrounding communities.

Health authorities say rapid containment is crucial. “We cannot take chances with the lives of children. Every necessary measure must be taken now to curb this spread,” said Pastor Chris Mbarie, Executive Chairman of Orlu Council.

Parents and guardians have been advised to monitor their children closely and report any symptoms, including sore throat, fever, and swollen glands, to nearby health facilities.
